VLOG #55 – TikTok, WeChat, & our data privacy

For those of you who have been following my channel for a while, you may notice that the whole topic of data privacy is something I am passionate about. In 2017, I made a video about GDPR and ever since then, I have continuously talked about this topic. When I read about the concerns from the US government about the data collected by foreign social networks and the fact that a foreign government could force those companies to handover the data about US citizens to them, it brought me right back to my first conversation I had in Switzerland talking about Microsoft Azure. Data privacy continuous to be a concern for many companies and sovereign nations.

In fact, Switzerland still considers creating a “national cloud” as the cloud has become part of the critical infrastructure. And like how countries struggled to get their hands-on medical supplies in 2020, no country ever wants to be that dependent on critical infrastructure to another nation. At least, that is the idea. This topic is extremely complicated and there is one book that I believe should be a mandatory part of high school and all people should read it. It is called: “Tools and Weapons: The Promise and the Peril of the Digital Age” by Brad Smith and Carol Ann Browne. If you have not read it yet, then please read it and encourage your colleagues and family to read it too.

One of the fundamental questions to me remains if data privacy needs a certification scheme, what do you think?
